Most rectangles

A game for 2 or more players

This game reinforces the use of multiplication to find the area of a rectangle. It also encourages the recognition of the factor pairs for numbers.

You will need:

  • Four normal dice (or two 12-sided dice) or number cards 1-24
  • Square tiles (e.g. mosaic tiles or scrabble tiles) or squared paper
  • How to play

Each player draws a card or rolls the dice and calculates the total. They then use tiles or squared paper to make as many different rectangles as possible that each have an area equal to the number drawn or total rolled. The winner is the player who makes the most different rectangles.

    Variations

Using place value dice or number cards beyond 24, will involve working with facts and factors beyond the times tables. This will give practice of applying the rules of divisibility and using mental and written methods for division.
