First to a whole

A game for 2 or more players

This game helps build fluency with fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents and gives practice of adding decimals mentally. A 100 square acts as a whole one, with each row or column being a tenth and each square being a hundredth.

You will need:

Cards (shuffled) or a bag of counters/mini sticks with a mix of appropriate decimals, fractions and percentages written on.

These could be a mix of tenths and hundredths, including the equivalents for ¼, but all less than 3 tenths.

Each player will need:

  • A 100 square pop it or an empty 100 square and pens or 10 Numicon 10s and counters
  • Paper and pencil
  • How to play

Players take turns to draw a card/pick from the bag and then mark this amount on their 100 square, by popping, colouring or placing counters. They then record the amount on their whiteboard as a decimal.

On subsequent turns, players add the amount picked to their 100 square, recording the addition calculation and finding the total.

The winner is the first player to complete their 100 square.

    Variations

  • Record the addition calculations as percentages or fractions.
  • Begin with the whole one and subtract the amount picked each time. The first person to reach zero wins.
