A game for 2 or more players

This game uses fraction sticks to give practice of finding a fraction of a numbers.

You will need

  • Fraction sticks appropriate to the fractions you want to find (see variations for ideas)
  • A dice or number cards that will provide appropriate numbers
  • How to play

Put the fraction sticks in a pot or pool face down.

Players take turns to pick a fraction stick, roll the dice, then calculate the fraction of the number rolled. The player who has calculated the largest amount wins a point. The first player to get 3 points wins the game.

    Variations

  • For an easy game use a dice or number cards with multiples of ten and fraction sticks for tenths, fifths and halves.
  • For more challenge, but still with whole number answers, use fraction sticks for twelfths, sixths, quarters, and thirds with number cards for the multiples of 12.
  • For the most challenge, use any fraction sticks and either place value dice or 2 or 3-digit number cards. This will often involve decimal answers, so decide on a level of accuracy, e.g. rounding to 2 decimal places.
