Splat!

A game for 2 or more players

This game gives practice of finding an area by counting squares. It encourages estimation skills and the use of strategies to count partial squares.

You will need:

  • Pen and paper:
  • Squared paper and a pen/pencil
  • How to play

Choose a 2-digit number to be the target area - between 10 and 50 is a good range.

Each player quickly draws a splat shape on their paper, then works out the area by counting the squares it contains.

A useful strategy for dealing with partial squares in the shape is to count squares which are more than half and ignore those that are less than half.

The player whose area is closest to the target wins.

    Variations

  • Pick a number card or roll dice to choose a target number randomly.
  • Colour the splat to highlight its area.
