Carrying

AWhen using the formal column method for addition, mistakes made when carrying digits may indicate an insecure understanding of place value, particulary ‘teen’ numbers, which will require additional reinforcement to enable correct use of the method.

For example, in this calculation, the units have been correctly added to give a total of 14, but the 1 ten has been written in the units column and the 4 units in the tens column. The pupil needs to read the number from left to right, to realise that it reads 41, rather than 14.
