Carrying across the decimal point

A lack of understanding of place value in decimals can lead to errors when carrying across the decimal point. Pupils need to realise that adding tenths together can result in enough tenths to make a whole one. This means recording a digit in the units column rather than assuming it has to remain to the right of the decimal point, as the following example shows.
